Earlier this month PHA President Kathleen Miller posted a statement about recent reports of abuse at Sonoma Developmental Center. (see: PHA President's statement on reports of abuse at SDC, Aug. 3, 2012.) Since then, news coverage of incidents of lapses in care at SDC and the management of the state's developmental centers has continued.
Kathleen has prepared the following video message to address questions and concerns over the most recent coverage:

Autistic girl expresses her inner voice
This is the fascinating, and suprising to many, story of one autistic girl and what she was able to reveal about her own intelligence once she found a way to communicate. What she describes about the autistic person's reality is especially interesting.
Her situation does not mirror everyone's and is certainly different from the experiences of people who struggle with multiple disabilities, but it is interesting to see the role therapists, trained caregivers and dedicated engagement can play in helping someone develop and grow.

Jason Kinzler's Story
In the debate over how Virginia should care for its disabled population, state lawmakers wrestle with whether or not to pour precious resources into community care....or continue to support institutions that many families have relied on for years.
This is the story of Jason Kinzler, a 36-year-old with Angelman Syndrome, and his family's experience with the Northern Virginia Training Center in Fairfax County, VA, as it was presented by CBS 6 WTVR.

A little good news for today
Here's a story about Justin, a high school student at Greece Athena High School in Rochester, New York, who happens to be autistic. It's a report that made the CBS evening news and it will make you smile (and maybe cry).

Lou and Bianca's autism story
This video really needs no preamble. Its compelling and inspiring message stands for itself. It's the beginning of a father and daughter's story of how their lives were affected by autism.
You can read more of Lou's story about his relationship with his daughter Bianca and his family's efforts to give her the best life possible despite her autism here on his blog 'Lou's Land'.

New PHA Video Debuts at 'Heroes With Heart'
The Parent Hospital Association's annual fundraiser 'Heroes With Heart' went off without a hitch Saturday at Cline Cellars in Sonoma Valley thanks to the hard work of the organizing committee and a small army of volunteers. Thanks to everyone who helped to make it happen.
Despite the wild wet weather, a snazzily dressed group of over 200 people (pictures to follow!) enjoyed nice music from the Rowan Brothers, a fine meal from Rocket Catering, and the happy company of fellow attendees. The barrel room looked beautiful, and we're pretty confident that a good time was had by all.
Those in attendance were also the first to view the new PHA video, which was put together for us by Past and Present Media. We're pleased to be able to present the story of the Parent Hospital Association and its work in support of the Sonoma Developmental Center and the developmentally disabled community in Northern California in this format. So thanks also to Past and Present Media for making that possible.
For everyone who wasn't able to be with us on Saturday, here's the video.
You can also view it on YouTube here - and share it with more people by emailing this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5K7blhIKD0
